A recent global study backed by AWS highlights the pivotal role Learning and Development (L&D) leaders play in the generative AI transformation within organisations. Based on responses from over 3,700 IT decision-makers, the findings reveal that 56% of organisations have initiated AI upskilling programmes, with a further 19% planning to do so within the year. Yet, many L&D teams face challenges in assessing employees’ AI training needs.

With 90% of organisations employing generative AI tools and nearly half fully integrating them, the demand for AI talent is surging. An impressive 92% of businesses indicate plans to recruit for AI-specific roles in 2025, with a quarter expecting at least half of their new hires to possess AI skills. Nonetheless, barriers like budget constraints and unclear training strategies continue to hinder progress.

As a solution, businesses are blending internal training with external hiring. Generative AI has now taken precedence over cybersecurity as the primary focus for IT budgets, with 60% of organisations appointing Chief AI Officers to spearhead this shift. L&D leaders are urged to prioritise upskilling, workforce planning, and organisational agility to truly harness the potential of generative AI.
